Bannockburn Sunday July 12th 1000 to 1600
« on: July 03, 2015, 11:46:01 AM »
Yet another organised dig which is looking for volunteers is the Bannockburn Big Dig taking place on Sunday July 12th 2015 between 1000am and 1600pm. Download the following and put yourself forward. Could be a few places for metal detecting the spoil heaps and general area if you ask.

                      http://www.archaeologyscotland.org.uk/dig-bannockburn-0

Click on the above then once the page is available "Click On" the words  ARCHAEOLOGY SCOTLAND  top left.
The page we are after will appear--scroll down to   UPCOMING EVENTS  on the right side of the download and then click on  Dig At Bannockburn.  You can  volunteer to participate if you wish to put your name forward. They are looking for traces from Robert The Bruce's campsite at this location.

You will be requested to complete a form when there. You park in the Bannockburn Centre and walk to the site from there.

Volunterering ?  then contact Dr Derek Alexander e-mail address  :-   DAlexander@nts.org.uk

Not certain but I believe Dr Tony Pollard & Neil Oliver will once again be in attendance.

You may not get a reply David as they want volunteers just to turn up on the day. This event is plastered all over twitter and is reported in most newspapers i have read. Nearly all volunteers will be turning up at the Bannockburn Centre ready to complete the paperwork required on the morning of the event. I hope you really enjoy the day out and make a find or two from the period. I believe medieval pottery has been recovered from this general area during the previous survey.Although not from this years area I must add.

Hi All I received information for this Sunday 12th July Bannockburn Dig! from 10am till 4pm if anyones interested. Please note there is no metal detecting...its a archaeology dig...using a small trowel, this is something which I also have a interest in but no experience as this will be my first time! I will be heading along to this myself...heres the reply, from the e-mail that was sent to me:

Hi Sorry about the delayed reply about Sunday 12th s dig at Bannockburn I was away on Mull and just got back.  Please do come along.  I have attached a map that shows where the field we will be digging test pits in is located, to the north of the statue of Robert the Bruce.  Scott the Property Manager at Bannockburn has asked if people are coming for the day if they could park cars in the Borestone Primary School car park (it is actually closer than the visitor centre car park), see attached map.  We will be meeting up close to the statue, look out for the medieval tent and the gazebos, at around 10am on Sunday morning. Remember to bring any tools you may have especially a garden spade!

See you on Sunday

Cheers

Derek

I'm a wee bit confused :o ??? I was under the impression it was a archaeological excavation thingy, are you saying you got in touch with the guy who said bring the metal detector along. That would be great if we could. I hate to say it but I can't put your name to a face  :-[ ;) so you will need to look me out on Sunday.  ;)

...well that is a turnaround, let us know if you are actually allowed to detect and if you find anything. Remember you will have to use all metal and detect everything!!

...the area most probably is scheduled. All metal just means run with no discrimination at all and detect all metal including iron. Remember, although we tend to avoid iron (discriminate it out) during our general detecting, on archaeological sites that iron signal might actually turn out to be something wonderful!!!
