Info sought re Suzuki Grand Vitara please? ...
« on: November 27, 2015, 04:39:58 PM »
Hi all.  My car is in it's death throes (which is why I haven't been to Digs recently   :( :( :( :( :( :( :(  and I have been offered a Suzuki Grand Vitara (2008) as possible replacement.

I've checked the www for info, and hope to get a look at one tomorrow (Saturday) but my impression so far is that it is probably much too small for a big fat guy like me, and has very little capacity for carrying stuff around.  Not too impressed either with the mpg (I regularly got over 50mpg with my Ford Galaxy).  Sure, it's 4wd and has better ground clearance which is useful, but is by no means imperative.

I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone who has any knowledge of the vehicle?

Thanks,

Bob.

Im sure that Scotty has just sold a Suzuki Grand Vitara and he rated it well,  he's your man for all things car related ( hes a professional mechanic). :) He should be on here later.

A good tool for when buying any used car is this. Check the MOT history ie. whether it's ever failed any MOTs and for what reasons, whether it's had advisories for corrosion etc. in the past.
Just put in the reg number and the vehicle make

Had a Grand Vitara Exec couple of years ago, loved it, plenty room, had roof bars and tow bar if needed to shift stuff, and did not have one bit of bother with it. Still miss it lol...

Hey Bob , i can assume it`s the 3 door mate as they have no real boot space as such until you put down the seats if you have passengers not too handy ,5 door has good load space tho, this model Grand Vitara is a monocoque chassis unlike the older models with separate chassis`s which were superb off roaders ,this is a good 4 x4 though as it`s switchable you`ll no be stuck ,unlike the Toyota Rav4`s which auto detect terrain ,i had the 2 litre petrol which on a run got 32 ish mpg & very smooth too ,the diesel engine used in these are Renault sourced Suzuki haven`t made their own diesel engines it`s the 1.9 dci TD which they have fitted with a diesel particulate filter  ::)DPF
These must get changed at 90,000 miles and are a very common source of problems to modern diesels we had a 58 plate in with 46,000 just & Dpf had choked solid due to wee driving journeys aboot the doors
cost £1,200  :( as you are a big chap the space inside would be perfect , my car made me feel skinny  :D ,what is the one you were thinking of Bob ?

Wee update ...

It's apparently a 2008, 5 door, 1.9 diesel with around 70k miles on clock.

Have seen a similar model this morning and looks to be probably ok for space albeit nothing like my Galaxy.

Q.  re mpg  ..  I'm told that because it's a 4wd I won't get the 50+mpg I regularly get with the Galaxy.  I also believe it can be driven as a 2wd (rear wheels) however, so if I did that, would it improve the mpg?

Never had a 4wd before and have no idea how they work!

Thanks again for all the info  -  It's been really helpful to get your feedback.

Bob.

Cheers for that.  The filter certainly does appear to be a nuisance going by www posts. Is that because folk don't change it d'you think?

Nope it`s because use cheap supermarket fuels ,you Must use the premium fuels also the engine oil used Must be the 5/30 fully synthetic low ash . The Galaxy is powered by the VW 1.9 TDi engine great engines ,your gonna find it difficult to get a diesel 4X4 with anything like 50mpg sorry mate it`s one or t`other  ::)
