Glass target balls
« on: April 18, 2016, 08:50:34 PM »

I know some of you are into your shooting memorabilia so thought I'd post up a pic of two target balls I found as a child. The balls were found about half a mile, and at least a year, apart! Strangely, after I'd found the first one, my Dad showed me a medal won by his Grandfather in the 1890's for glass ball shooting. The medal was from Perthshire - I found the balls in Argyll!
I took these to Antiques Roadshow in 2001 and appeared on TV explaining their use to Michael Aspel - none of the experts knew what they were.
Cheers, Ewan

Cracking artefacts! Lovely things in their own right. Well found!  :D      Might make a really nice festoon light string if you had enough of them!

They were filled with feathers, so when hit and burst you could see the effect. Fired off a simple spring arm, they were the first clay pigeons. There was a factory in Perth made them, but were often blue, but they come in all colours.

Very collectable, and worth about £100 each, the best ones don't have any fragmentation at the end.
