...yeah, John was on the radio this morning. This was the Burnswark project that Beyond The Beep were involved in last September and we unearthed over 60 of the sling bullets, including the new, previously unknown, versions with the holes. We also had a front row place to hear these things as they are fired over your head, and they do make quite a wee noise, and if you imagine them in the hundreds flying towards you, then it would be pretty scary!!

...we should be involved with the project again this year, and there is a museum night, explaining the findings of the project at Annan Museum tomorrow night, with another chance to see it at Dumfries Museum later in the year if you miss this one. The image for the project talk is below and the details are:

And now the Romans are coming........ "The Offensive Romans" exhibition opens at Annan Museum on Saturday 4 June. At 6.30pm on Friday 3 June Dr John Reid will give a talk at Annan Museum entitled “Bullets, Ballistas, and Burnswark”. Nearly 2000 years ago something very dark may have happened at Burnswark Hill near Lockerbie – come along to find out more! This event is free and open to all but please call Annan Museum to book a seat (tel 01461 201384). The talk will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to see the exhibition.

...also in this months edition of Current Archaeology, John has written a great article about the project, an extract of it can be seen below and online here: http://www.archaeology.co.uk/articles/features/burnswark.htm

...yup mate, we detected over 3000 targets without digging during the 13 days, with a minimum of 700 being 100% identifiable lead sling bullets. John has pioneered a cool system for the identifying of particular metals using a control machine, and we were over 90% successful on the test targets within the archaeological trenches. We actually  dug up over 60 of the sling bullets on the non scheduled areas around the site, which we were allowed to detect during our down time, and this may have helped firm up a discarded theory about an earlier Roman camp being at the site  :D ;D ;D
