Hammered coins
« on: May 25, 2016, 10:41:28 PM »
Posting on behalf of a friend... on his permission I think he's hit a hotspot!!

I think the big one is a king Edward the first long cross penny, and the small one a half penny king Edward as well...
can I have a proper full I.D. Derek cheers....

Unfortunately he's not given a sense of scale.....

Nothing of interest so far...2016 there again not been out much...;)

...nice finds, and these have obviously seen the plough. There may be more there and tell your mate to keep searching! Anyway, the 'big' one is an Edward I, class 9b (c.1299 - 1300/01), London mint, Spink 1408.

...the other could be a halfpenny going by the size of the lettering, but would need crisper images of it and the diameter of the internal dotted circle. Anyway, if the size checks out, then it looks like an Edward I halfpenny, class 8 (crown with straight sides), London mint, Spink 1436

...it is unusual to find a single penny and halfpenny and looking at the obverse of the penny, there may be a mark where another coin has been stacked on it. Thus I would check the area very carefully and dig every squeek, as there may be a possible hoard?
