Rotovator find
« on: October 21, 2016, 11:28:36 AM »
Regrettably not my find but a gardener friend found this item a couple of days ago when Rotovating ground at the west end of Dundee.  There was a tiny piece that came off when his machine hit it but he saved it and you can just about see it at top right.  I think it will be possible to reattached it.
I will try to show the hallmarks too.  Size at its largest dimension is 5.5cm and it's quite heavy.
Howard.

What a fantastic find Howard, it's a pity about the little bit of damage. It will be interesting to find out how old it is with the Hallmarks. Well done to the gardener. :)

Great find. A wee drop of silver solder and a file down and it'd be as good as new. Looks like a brooch of some sort... Any luck with the hallmarks. Cheers for posting :)

Looks like a cracking piece of silver, pity about the damage although looks like it would be easily repaired. Well done to the gardener.

I have asked my local jewellery expert (Linda) and she does not think it is a piece of jewellery because it is very heavy and just not the sort of thing a lady would wear in late Victorian times.  If she is correct then I have no idea what it could be.

If it's too big, could it be a wine label? I'm thinking it could have a grape vine style... If you google 'Silver wine label' it's kinda close... It has got the two hanging points on it, (if there's no fixing marks on the back...)

I'm pretty sure it's half of a ladies Victorian belt buckle

I'll tell you exactly what it is howard, it's half of a nurses  belt buckle, the flat edge should run vertically as they were two mirror halves.

I've found two before myself one silver and one silver plated

Pretty close shug but no cigar mate  ;)
