Elizabeth 1st Sixpence?
« on: December 07, 2018, 05:37:28 PM »
Well,

After having almost given up on ever finding a hammy I stumbled over this little beauty today whilst beating a hasty path to shelter after the clouds opened. Detector was on and I was swinging wildly whilst ducking hailstones.

Soooo.....is this a Lizzy sixpence? it is 26mm across and is dated 1570 from what I can see. It is a bit bent sadly but complete so that's good. It has had a tough paper round but the reverse is in reasonably good condition.

Next (and possibly sacrilegious) does one clean ones hammies or does one leave them as they are? I have gently washed it with soapy water but it would be nice if it were a wee little shinier!

Lovely coin, well done. I certainly wouldn't say it's had a tough paper round as it's still got a good bit of detail other than the bust being a bit worn. You could very carefully straighten it out using boiling water or a heat gun as it doesn't look too bent.

Deep a lovely Lizzy sixpence, (the rose behind her just gives away it's a sixpence)
Most lizzies are extremely worn on the face so this is in good nick, I wouldn't clean it any further as you'll take away it's history and loose any worth for the coin.
Well done on it 1st hammy
4 coin hoards.
