Fishing spear or just wishful thinking?
« on: December 12, 2018, 12:10:42 PM »
Hi folks.  Any ideas on this thing I found at the recent charity dig at Montrose?

A few folk saw it on the day and thought it may be a bronze spear head, although there's no socket to fit a shaft into .

It has a square tapered point with a series of barbs on two diagonally opposite corners.  However it doesn't seem to resemble any spearheads I've seen on Google Images.  I think it's bronze.  It's not magnetic.

Any info or theories appreciated.

Thanks
Cal   8)

Some kind of tent peg or ground anchor maybe? Just a thought.

It's got a harpoony look about it... Could it have once had a tang, now broken off, to attach it to a shaft? There appears to be a faint impression of a hole near the blunt end in the 3rd pic... maybe for a line or ring? Some harpoon heads had a hole half-way along; could it be half a head? If it's a harpoon or spear at all... Nice find all the same...  :)

it could have been a part of  a trident for fishing .I found one up the river Ericht near blairgowrie  for salmon I threw it away as I was quite young seemingly they are quite rare.

Get a pic in to TT, might be something they've seen.

Thanks for your input guys.  They're all valid suggestions - I'm thinking the prong of a trident sounds likely, Johnl, but hoping it's actually a Bronze Age spear.   :o  I've sent photos to TT.  I'll let you know what they say.  8)
