Heads up for those interested:

There is a new documentary series (River Hunters) about detecting in rivers in the UK starting on Monday 18th March on History Channel.

Episode 1 is from Stirling and is on at 9pm.  Please note that the website has the date wrong and says Monday 16th instead of 18th.

It was pretty good but not quite as good as I had hoped for.

Adverts every 10 mins (for 5mins each time) over a supposed 1hr program - so 25 to 30 mins of ads. Normnal I guess these days.

With what was left there was about 10 to 15 mins of actual detecting interspersed with historical discussions.

Some very nice finds (no spoilers!) but have to say that they made some big leaps of faith regarding the actual context of some of  them, particularly one of the coins.

Still, I will continue to watch these, after recording them so I can skip past the endless ads, as the program concept is intriguing.

Makes me even more sure that there is a place for a proper detecting documentary series on TV - something that really gets in to the detail of the sites, the detecting technology and the process of detecting. I guess that may be a niche for most but I'm not so sure. Something like Time Team but with a the major emphasis on detecting.

If you download it, don't the adverts disappear?

I'm pretty much in agreement with Muddy.   Not utterly fascinating but interesting enough to give it another go.  Nice to see local detectorists being asked to join in the search.

Agree with all...

Not as good as it was made out to be.

Would have liked to see more of the finding and equipment used, although they looked like Garrett detectors?

Have the series on Series Link on Sky so will continue to view and see how it goes...

Nice that they started in Scotland.

Wonder how many detectorists will descend on the Stirling river area in the hope to find a BA axe, Roman or hammy
4 coin hoards.

Could have made a better program coming to one of our DS Sunday outings?

Just watched the second episode.  Completely bored now.  Very sad, I thought it might have been more interesting.

Agreed. More like a history programme than a detecting one. Disappointed not to learn more about the tea set. Looks to be a riverside picnic gone wrong!
