hi folks, Do I need some sort of Metal Detecting License or permit before going to a dig?

No mate but most of us carry insurance NCMD or FID its around £8 for a year

Not for one of our own digs, as the permissions have already been attained.

But, in general, it certainly used to be the case that you needed permission to beach/foreshore detect for the 'crown' beaches.
A surprising number of beaches across the country are privately owned and strictly speaking would need the owners permission in the same way that a field would.

 I believe most beaches in Scotland are Crown property so you are able to detect on them, but there are places like river estuaries where the land ownership extends to the underwater area too so you would need the owner's permission there (such as the Firth of Forth at Culross, something to do with salmon fishing rights).  Be careful of unexploded ordnance, a surprising amount end up on beaches.
