Found this today in a field near Peebles. It's pretty heavy and looks bigger than an old penny. Looks like a token of some sort to me. Statue in middle with 4 people round the bottom. Can't make out any of the writing but I think there is some. Anyone have any ideas? Ta!

if you look closely it looks likely there is a hole just right of the head .it could be a medallion of some sort .or a medal,

Nope, no hole I'm afraid. Have had a closer look and I think there are laurel leaves up the sides. Also the back has some text, looks like "THE SOMME" to me or possibly summer or Scottish... very intriguing item!

I'm pretty sure it says
THE SOCIETY
. Also at the bottom there appears to be crossed thistle heads. There also appears to be an
M
under
THE
.
Is there, on the top edge, the remains of a metal loop for a ribbon?

Oh yes, that could indeed be what it says. How odd! I wonder what it's purpose was...

The figure on the front looks like Justice holding up her scales, with her sword hand lowered; standing on a fancy pedestal. It might be a society medallion of merit or membership?

Yes can see the M too, very clear. No sign of any loop for a ribbon but at 27g it's certainly medal weight! It's 40mm wide and 3mm thick by the way. I like the idea of it being a token of merit but which society I wonder.

Also, towards the top, curving round, is a word or words beginning
PR
, with
TC
or
IC
towards the end.
PRESENTED TO
maybe?

Found it!

It's a bronze medal for small bore marksmanship in the Bell trophy, issued between 1909 and 1939 by what was then known as the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs and what is now the National Small-bore Rifle Association. Cool!

Good eye! If you saw that on the same side as 'Society' then it's 'Presented by' according to the pic on the interwebs.
Makes me wonder who won it and how it came to be lost in a field.

Interesting find. My father won a medal for small bore rifle shooting and it is my regret that many years ago when I was starting my hobby of collecting antique percussion and flintlock pistols and muskets that I sold his medal to help fund my first gun. Not quite the same as this one but it brings back memories just the same.
