Mount or Belt end?
« on: June 30, 2011, 06:07:09 PM »
Found this today. Looks very old but has me beat. Cant find anything like it in any of my reference books
The fixings on the back do not look like it is a mount as the two fixings points are unlike any belt stud i have seen.
It could be an early belt end not a typical strap end style that would have the 2 holes for rivets.

It has some red enamelling still remaing.and you can just make out some design on the round raised part and the flat area to the left.

No Victorian junk in the area so it is not a furniture fitting. Looks much older and 'cruder'

Anyone have any ideas?

Looks like a strap end and could very well be Viking. One for TT for sure. Well saved  :D

One of the most interesting artefacts recovered this year by a forum member. Lovely red enamel with some chevron decoration as well.  Could be an iron age brooch although the fitments for it being a brooch are quite strange. Send Stuart Campbell at the TTU a photograph as I'm sure he will be very interested in it and wish  to receive it for TTU assessment.

I think it could be a Roman button-and-loop fastener, something like the one below.

Hammy Count 2012 = 47
Hammy Count 2013 = 45

ironage strap terminal or something of that ilk ,the round raised part is very celtic in design with possibly a hint of a trumpet on the flat part behind the incised lines ,going by the design and shape i would date this to about 100bc to 100ad . nice find and definately one fot tt

Mystery almost solved.

Thanks for this; this is a very interesting piece of Roman or Iron Age harness fitting, probably 1st-2nd century AD. I’ll get Fraser Hunter’s opinion but it is definitely something we’d like to see.
