i have found a few off these too,i get a very crisp signal and think YES a hammy but no its a bag seal.ive not got two alike so there must be loads of different ones so they make good items to collect, ive got one with the year 1799 that i got at the dundee dig.

Nice collection, which displays a variety of different types. I did collect these a good few years back but stopped. However i still retained quite a number of mostly medieval in date bag seals. I'll upload a photograph of most of them later on in the day. WELL RECOVERED s6otty keep at it as their is plenty of them about.

Anna and I found two of these at the Dundee dig, one from S. Petersburg and one from Archangel. Lucky told us about the TAFAC journal and we identified them from that. Each seal has the contents of the bale (in our case flax seed), the year of export and the name of the quality control commissioner for the port. They're fascinating wee things. :)
