Half Sovereign from DS16
« on: January 23, 2012, 10:01:02 PM »
Hi

Here is my Victoria Half Sovereign from DS16.
It is 1876 Type A4 with Die number 20 below shield. Not a very rare example but that doesn't matter as it is a cracking little coin and made my day.
Thanks for looking

Stuart

Die numbers were issued in 1863 so mint could monitor the wear etc to issued coins,,thats why you find different portraits etc & some rare experimental issues .& very rare proto types .
yours is a standard issue type A2 There were 2,204,000 of these minted in 1859
hope that helps  :) :)

However to follow on, in 1876 some were minted with no die numbers! I couldn't remember seing a die number on Stuarts coin in the flesh was brimming with excitement just in case lol

However the standard 1876 comes in at around £175 in value, not to be sniffed at by any means :)
Oh look! another arsehole ;-) (people watching the professional beggars round central station)
