I know its a lion but what is it from?
« on: August 30, 2010, 07:07:04 PM »
Found this when I was out with Hangova yesterday. Anyone know when its from and what it would be part of? It looks as if its made from  thin copper.

No sign of a stud, or solder mark. It does resemble those masks, Mark. A guy on detectorist reckons it could be a butt cover from a flint or percussion pistol but again there doesn't seem to be any way it would stay on.

Could be any type of decorative fitment, a photograph of the undecorated side would help to establish this.  VERY NICE FIND !!

I've seen similar types of decorative fitments used at water fountains during Queen Victoria's reign. That is, long before we had tap water and everyone went to the village fountain for their daily water supply.i would say your lovely find dated to that period, although over to  PETER H.

you could be close lucky as it was found near a well which was supposed to have been used by queen mary and her army before the battle of langlands but is sadly filled in now
