Nice one Mark - Joe is correct - it's a Russian flax bale seal from Archangel and the good markings hopefully mean I can find who the quality control officer that stamped it was and maybe the owner/agent too. Watch this space ;)

That will be impressive if you can gather all that info from the bag seal

Just another little bit of history archangel was also one of the ports during the world war were the Atlantic convoys went to depending on if it was summer or winter. But due to the date on the seal it was well before that time 1836 (well a few yrs lol)

Well can only get the initials of the owner / agent but I believe the officer who stamped it was Mikhailo Sveshnikov (I'll let you wade through the Russian census' to do the family history ;) )
:- Mikhailo Sveshnikov

Doodles - history repeats itself - St Petersburg, Riga and other Baltic ports were favoured in this way for the flax and hemp trade for the very same reasons - Archangle became ice-bound for large parts of the winter.

Thanks Rob -
First is a Russian bale seal (prob from St Petersburg) which I'll translate and add to the Gallery
Second is a Hungarian flour bag seal - http://www.bagseals.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=4135 Got this type so wont add it
Third is as it 'says on the tin' - Leeds Phosphate works - http://www.bagseals.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1119  "   "   "
Fourth is another Russian bale seal but this time from the port of Riga - http://www.bagseals.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=4848       "   "   "

NOW you can melt them for scrap ....  ::)
