Title: Bullet ID
Post by: Stuwat1 on April 13, 2017, 07:06:12 PM
Afternoon all, found a bullet on a permission earlier today which is different from the usual rounds. The area is on the fence line of RAF Leuchars (I know its an army station now but it'll always be the RAF to me  ;D) I'm used to finding 303 rounds and pest control rounds but this one is bigger. It weighs 16 grams and is made of lead, i can also see it has been fired as it is rifled from the barrel.

Pics say 1000 words so here's a few.

Thanks

Stuart

Looks like a .577 Enfield round.

Yeah I agree after comparing with other pics from Google. Looks like I'll be trawling the net looking for more info on that.

Cheers

I think it is called a minie ball 1840-60? and probably from an Enfield as S@S has said, nice find.

Minnie ball, there would originally have been a ceramic insert in the hollow base to expand the bullet on firing to make it a gas tight fit in the bore.
