Title: Finally a good coin
Post by: briser_fae_the_broch on October 15, 2017, 01:54:37 PM
I got this yesterday, really nice condition and without doubt my best coin find so far.
A nice 1816 George III tanner

It's funny, I found 4 coins but you should see the state of the other 3, all from the 1970's.  This one fell out of the sod as I turned it and I didn't even need my pointer to locate.   Made a lovely pinging sound on my Garret.

That's a cracker! I dug one up a few months ago and thought it was a pretty good example but that is much cleaner.

The detail on the belt buckle (or what ever it is) at about 7 o'clock on the reverse is much clearer than on mine.

Excellent find - and a good one is worth a few bob too I recall from my basic research.

I am wondering if the ground is part of the reason it's in such good nick, (under trees in dry fibrous rooty soil in private ground, not a farm), either that or it was not in circulation much before being lost, that could mean it had been in the ground undisturbed for the best part of 200 years!  There was nothing much to clean off and I did not want to polish it and screw it up.
I did have a search online as to value but sadly it's not rare and there are loads of them about.  Not planning on selling it anyway.

Aye it's definitely in great nick, they all seem to turn up with that year, 1816. I suppose you could give it a light polish with some bicarbonate of soda and a drop of water mixed into a paste. And Muddy, I believe they refer to the 'belt' as a garter 🤓. You could be onto a good permission there Briser, good luck...

Got a shilling a couple of weeks ago 5 minutes from my house, exactly the same date but in even better nick than the 6pence, make a nice pair.  All's I need now is a florin and half-crown.

Really quite awful photos with my mobile as this thing looks great, but how do you get the black rim cleaned without ruining the coin?

I was always curious why so many shillings and sixpences come up with 1816 until I learned there was a major re-issue starting that year.
