Title: Anyone think it’s worth restarting digs?
Post by: Grant on May 18, 2018, 11:29:00 AM
We always prided ourselves on having land at this hardest of times of year.

I was glad when D&S started running digs as despite what anyone says there’s not really enough folk up here to have them at 3 places every Sunday so I was relieved as the pressure was off and after 4 years of it kinda needed a real rest  :o

I’ve loved the chance to go see my team play on the Sundays and watch the F1 live so no fud can’t text call me (driving) tell me the result before I’m home, but something has always been missing, and that’s the people whose company I enjoyed for so long.

I miss the banter  :-[

I even kinda miss the moaning in a Sado
masochistic sense!

I miss that feeling of getting Sunday cracking a cold beer and despite the shite weather feeling like I have a sun tan  ;D

Anyway, complacency could again prevent it being cost effective, I don’t know.

What I do know is I miss all the characters.

Enjoyed DS digs but cant see big numbers attending regular weekly digs again due to other digs going on .. maybe doing quarterly weekend rally special events would work Grant .. (  Loch Fyne rally was great )

Hi Grant! Yes! Although I agree that weekly might be impractical for a while... see how it plays...

I'd be up for it as would The Captian.

Getting tired of digging the same old fields - there are only so many Viccy pennies that you can dig and still get excited. Dug 8 today plus a 1929 shilling but it is the variety that I miss. Need to add to my vast collectinos of hammys (that's one for the record)

Its always good to have options!

Maybe to get the ball rolling  and a cost free dig (just a suggestion ) get a beach detecting dig/day out  organised ... gets everyone out who cant get land, bit of banter / catch up and if it doesnt work out you/DS isnt out of pocket... then again its just a suggestion.

Either way when my healths back on track im up for either!

It would be good to have a few digs but as was mentioned a dig every week is a bit much for yourself to organise as folk should realise that you have a life beyond detecting Scotland
I know that some Sundays I'm at work and can't make digs but it's good to see on the forum some of the treasures that people find
So go for it and see

Speaking for myself  and being totally selfish, the more Dig opportunities there are the happier I am. That's not to say I would or could go to them all, but IF they were there, I'd choose which suited me best on a one by one basis.

I suppose that translates to being an 'expression of interest' rather than any kind of commitment, which is as good as no good to someone trying to figure out if it's worth it.

I suspect that there are a few others who might feel the same, but I can only speak for me.

It can certainly be a solo hobby, but there's no doubt that it's much more fun and more enjoyable when there are other folk there to banter with and share experiences.

Best of luck with the resurrection process... I'll be watching to see what happens.

Bob.

Hi Grant,
if you're listening, what Uncle Bob just said (1st June) A good number of digs by some groups are just too far for me to travel to every week. On a selfish level, it would be good to have the extra venue to choose from.

Metal detecting is definately something best done as a group. As well as the social side, it provides a 'hive' mind allowing us to collectively sample the fields across a farm and identify hotspots, either by area, or farm or by individual field. Something it would take years to do on our own.

To be fair mate i think forums are falling by the wayside. Social media like facebook etc is taking over by all accounts. Maybe start a private ds group on facebook for the digs. Could generate alot of interest with a decent target audience.

What has happened to DS I thought this was the club that could bring like minded  people  together  to do something we all enjoy and share finds and stories together I love getting out into the countryside and to detect is a bonus and I am sure it's the same for us all on our permissions but we are supposed  to be a club that's United in our interests so let's get interested and get together to bring Detecting  Scotland  back from the brink PLEASE

I also do not like facebook and won't be involved in it if I can help it but I kind of understand where Rory is coming from.
If you want to keep things about the group strictly within the group then facebook is very handy, whereas an open forum such as this site is totally transparent and anyone and everyone can see whats going on and who's saying what and where.
Facebook allows groups to conduct their business covertly without anyone they don't want knowing finding out anything.
As for the return of digs, we would be happy if they did return, unfortunately, we only got to a few before the split happened.

It's been 2 months since the original post of brining back DS digs and it would appear that there are a few people interested in having one, including myself (as Uncle Bob said the more the merrier). So Grant are we any closer to getting one orginised, as you were the person that started the thread?

Sorry mate been busy with the wedding and all that stuff, got back from honeymoon last night so I’m looking at Sunday 29th of July buddy. Might be doing burgers at lunchtime if the forecast is right as I got a BBQ!  :D

I’ll put the relevant info in the relevant section tonight

Would never have stopped running them if it wasn’t for all the bitching and moaning.
People made the mistake of thinking I cared about the money 😂

Anyway we may have something in the pipeline for a week Sunday (16th) watch your emails
