Post by: maxwell8tre on March 24, 2013, 05:02:46 PM
Let's start the ball rolling with a big 'WELL DONE!!!' to Paddy for this little beauty of a Latvian/Swedish CHRISTINA RIGA SOLIDUS SILVER COIN 1632-1654 (Schilling).

An absolute gem. Rare to see toning on silver hammered like this.

A massive thank you to Coinage Britannia (You Tube) for ID'ing this like it was a penny in his pocket!

More pics to come when I clean my own finds up but I took some coppers and silver home with me. A nice Cap badge rounded off a lot of decent finds from a great dig!

I'm currently picture finishing, if you've got any to add of your finds today, please do! If I don't credit the finder in my shots, I'll ask who it was. If someone knows please let me know so I can update the finder credits! Cheers.

It is a lovely wee coin, on a note about my day I have never dug so much in a day it was great. I think I had more coppers today than I have collected since starting detecting but I think my find of the day was my half military badge.

The tin just after the hammered is mine.

No silver today but a first for me with a Cartwheel Penny, so, happy with that :D

Am too bloody tired to photograph stuff so will add in next few days- that was a helluva lot of digging!  Also found an intact wee lead soldier crouching down with rifle- British Army and is wearing a kilt .  heheh.

Silver thimble.
Rose badge.
Naval button with small amount of gilding still visible.
4 copper coins.
Lead soldier.
9 Bale seals.

Nice small piece of decorative marble.

I still need to sift through my scrap bucket to recheck what's in there. All in all a very productive day. I shall post up some pictures tomorrow afternoon ;D

Hi everyone

Many thanks for making me welcome at the dig, for my first organised dig I was very happy, I thought it was a trade token so I am very happy to find out it is a silver hammered.  I also retrieved a bale seal, a 1915 silver sixpence and some unidentified coins, and lots of lead.

Cheers for the ID and I am surprised its that old, it was small and is very thin.

Cheers  :D

I also found a shiny piece of silver metal which i am trying to find out what it is??

Hi Alan, I've got permissions on the fields all around there including across the road down to the motorway, there are 4 different landowners (RG,AD,AW and 1 other) who is a nightmare lol
My half sov came from one of em.

Nice to meet some of the guys and girls on Sunday.
Although this is one of my permissions and I have done many hours on the fields there is still an abundance of stuff coming up every time the fields are ploughed.
An enjoyable day even if it was baltic weather. All the digging kept everybody warm.
As usual my finds very varied from this field with the most notable being a 1902 american indian head one cent (in poor condition), a 1897 3d, a machine gun corps button and what might be a heraldic pendant. Loads of other stuff, lead, copper, brass fittings pieces of hallmarked silver spoons(may have been silver plated) a brass threaded tube with a cork stopper in the end, numerous brass labels etc.

Most of the items I dug.

And still more
(http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg241/butehawk/file_zps750f7782.jpg)
Coins buttons and bag seals.

All in all a hard days digging.
I found the 3d late in the day and when I got home it was not in my pocket. I took the dogs for a walk on Monday morning to where I had found it and retraced my steps and there it was in its zip lock bag beside the hole where I had found it. Lucky or what. My hands were that cold that I must have missed my pocket when I was putting it away.
Thanks to the organisers.

Right... here's my collection of pictures.  The soldier is kilted... the rusty marks on the paper are a testament to what happens when you drag a drawer knob across your lovely crafted bit of paper before realising it had a hole in it and was full of water.  DOH!  Was too tired to re-do it all.  Heheheheheh.

Big thank you to Lucky for getting me to the rally and Magicmark for getting me back.  The willingness of people to help out, whether it be with transport, ID's or technical assistance is what makes a good detecting community.  Much appreciated guys.  :D

and lastly...

Company is Teesdale and Co.  I think I can read they were/are confectioners.  Ignore the fact I misspelt the name on the bit of paper.  My brain was still cold.   ;D

StirlingSteve, the 1st thingy is a decorated plate out of a watch. It would have been fitted over the workings.

Carrumba  the thingy that looks like a hunting horn is in fat a window catch. See one I found and Hubby I.D'd. He found some on a re-cycling site. I found another one a few days ago.

Yeah Butehawk! The pendant could well have a fantastic story behind it! Great find and one high on my list. Love heraldic stuff since I found a lot of buttons with the Overtoun crest. Great additional pics since the last time I checked. They just keep coming - what a productive site!

Finally, I charged the batteries in my camera and here are my finds:

Could anyone tell me more about the clasp, little lead cap, round object with fleur-de -lises, round object with shamrocks (a brooch?) and that 'Glasgow Celebration' badge? I suspect the round thing with fleur-de -lises was originally gilded, as there are some faint traces of gilt (top and slightly to the right on the picture); it might have been hinged as well, as there is a thicker bit on the other side on the edge.

Finally, I charged the batteries in my camera and here are my finds..

Great shots of the finds! Would agree about the picture hanger. Looks like a little statue bottom under that! Third pic from bottom maybe a bell seal matrix (http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/16612406_post-medieval-silver-gilt-seal-matrix)?

Nice finds :)

The Glasgow medal celebrates peace after the First World War.

Well, the lead statue bottom is obvious to me, it's probably some saint. Bell-shaped object is empty inside, so if it is a part of a seal, the matrix must have been lost. Maybe it is a cap of a little bottle?
I also found a bazillion of lead seals, similar to the ones found by the others. Also, some coins I mentioned earlier and a bronze/copper button - they are in an olive oil bath.
Thanks folks for your suggestions.

Well found buddy!

That wee bronze nail is the first picture is nice! I always like to see those!

There is a river nearby and barges after the war would bring all the property from bombed out houses up and spread them into there fields which is why you often find burnt items and furniture knobs with a bit of charred wood still in them or fire damaged coins apart from stubble burning lol.

There's dunny waste too lol so we could be digging in old poop  ;D

Interesting story, so that's where all this rubbish came from :)
Any idea how old is the hand-made nail?
