Title: DS77 FINDS, great day
Post by: MagicMark on August 17, 2014, 06:58:02 PM
Hi All

what a day we had at DS77, the finds were popping up all over. When I left at 17.00 there had been 9 hammered found plus quite a few milled and some very nice hammered coppers. Maxwell got the ball rolling with a nice Eddy Penny, followed by Barrie43 getting his first hammered a very nice Groat. Then we had a cut half of a voided long cross from a guest, then another Eddy penny from Chillgrove, folled by a Eddy penny from Creptis and a Lizzie half groat from Scotty. Stevie67 also got a nice eddy and also Paisleymuddy, finishing off with a nice groat from Stan  ;D

Hopefully get back to the Kingsbarns area next week with some new fields in the mix   ;D

...the first groat pictured is a Henry V (1413-22), class C, normal 'frowning' bust, mullet on right shoulder, London mint, Spink 1765. Be very careful how you clean this one, although it is the most common class C, it is a scarce coin and is worth a few quid even if clipped!!!

Well what can i say  :) an absolutely fantastic day for a dig weather superb finds aplenty coins and artefacts spanning a few centuries the amount of well conditioned Turners ,Bawbees and the Hammys of course :)
Its a nerve racking experience for me organising the land for a dig frightened incase nothing comes up but those fears were blown out the window today WELL DONE ALL :)
I myself started off with a few coppers in and out of the fields i was leaving the big field to head to the freshly combined one and got a cracking signal 3 inches down and my best Turner to date O0 O0 i was beginning to get a bit dismayed that i wouldnt find a silver :( a quick scan down the end rigs and back up resulting in a George penny :) Left the field hopped over the wall back into the big field first signal ohhhh thin piece of metal in the clod broke it apart and WOW hammy i think i had a small  ::) ::) celebration dance :)
We WILL return to this Area that big field has a lot more to yield  ;D ;D

Great days detecting, thanks to Mark,  Stan, Eddy and Davey for organising and running the dig.

Highlight of the day for me was Stans spectacular Hammy song and dance routine. Biggest regret of the day was that nobody was there to film it !  ;D

I managed to find one of the hammered on the day , the first in a while for me , but hopefully the start of a roll !  ;)

Got many pics to come (including this one cleaned up,) but to get my ball rolling, here's my Canterbury mint Edward Penny (further ID?) that kept me waiting until all of 10AM to find it! (Couldn't believe I'd got off the mark so early on!!) Had a brilliant day today, it just felt like one of those dig that anything could be the next find. Start to finish, what a day! The pics already posted speak volumes though :)

Just dug :)

After a wee field clean with spit n' toothbrush! It's not getting anything more done to it really other than loose dry dirt toothbrushed off lightly.

One of the sweetest finds on the day was this lead cross with figure found by Eddy (Swed49) Interested in the outcome of this one!

...well found mate, your penny is as follows:

Edward I, Class 9a2 (1300-02), new flatter crown with spread side-fleurs, smaller initial cross pattée, pellet eyes, top-tilted S and often a star on the breast (can't make out one on yours, but not unusual to be missing). the letter 'A' is barred or unbarred, C and E are round, N is unbarred. Canterbury mint, Spink 1407

...I am pretty sure this is an Edward I, Class 9b1 (1300-02). It normally has a star on the breast, and yours may have but it is flattened. They are sometimes very difficult to distinguish.

My finds pale into insignificance against others,.. but here are some of them,.. I love Buckles, so I was very pleased with the couple of good ones I found, there is a Viccy 3pence dates 1873, a silver love token, six Turners, George 11 penny and  Viccy penny dates 1891.

.... but I guess the top find is the Clothes fastener, it is certainly 16th Century, but it has been suggested that it may well be earlier, so there will be photos of that item going off to TT,.. [ Lee, you may have a second item to take over if you will, we will know by next week ]

Thanks to DS team for another great day.  I even won a prize in the raffle, Detector Finds 5 by Gordon Bailey.  Very useful!  I think by now everyone will be bored by my tale of 37 years detecting and only now starting to find silver hammered coins.  Anyway on this dig I found my first (complete) hammered coin which I believe is an Eddy penny.  Really chuffed with that.
Photos attached.  Also found a cartwheel penny, only my second.  And a wee token thingy with a square "hole".  I will post a better picture in case anyone has suggestions for that.
Howard.

...very nice find Howard, your Eddy is as follows:

Edward I / II penny, Class 10cf3b (1302-10), London mint.

These are classified primarily by the form of their crown. The 10cf3 crown has a tall central fleur, the left leaf of which is usually damaged (very noticeable on yours). The ornaments are arrowheads, the left-hand one of which lacks its left barb and thus appears to incline to the right (again, very evident on yours). Early coins of this type (designated 10cf3a) have the broken lettering of 10cf2. Later coins (designated 10cf3b) have new lettering with a C of rounder form and an H with out-turned tail, which indeed yours has!!

Mark, thanks for the info about my token.  I must admit when I dug it up I did wonder if it could be a Chinese coin but have never seen one before.  Better photos shown here.  (Just a smear of WD40 has greatly improved the clarity, although this is very temporary).
Diameter is 22mm.

The rest of my finds from the dig, well aside from the pile of buttons and lead that I also managed! That's the hammie as cleaned as it's getting, I like them with a bit of dirt still on them :)

Edward I Penny, Charles II Bawbee (heads side is all but blank,) Loveheart harness pendant, Bagseal with unclear markings, Part of a copper alloy buckle, Butterfly pin (2cm across,) Button with an unclear design. A great wee mix on the day :)
