...had a good go at this and struck out. It would help if the legend could be read? It does look like a coin that may have been made into a button or at least a button which has borrowed the design of a coin?

...I know what you are thinking (i.e. seal) and I did look at the Lithuanian coat of arms, but when I reversed the image I couldn't read the legend either and I think there is an "S" reversed? There are Dutch and French coins similar, but no exact match. It is old though as the depiction of the horse is in the old style with both front and back legs extended, well worth a picture to TT!!

I ended up with a very similar image and sore eyes... I thought I saw a reversed E but it isn't an E. TT all day long!

Hi folks just got an email from Natasha Ferguson (TT)  ;D

Dear Kaspars,

Thank you for getting back to me. This is quite an unusual object as you are correct in that it does look like a coin. There are close parallels with late 17th century Dutch coins called ‘Rijderschelling’. It looks as if the coin, or at least a cast of it may have been made into a button. This is certainly something I would wish to take a closer look at for recording and to assess as Treasure Trove.

So far so good chaps!   :)   Rijderschelling is quite an interesting Google...

Title: Re: Dumbarton foreshore 24/07/2015
Post by: P0k3Rman on July 27, 2015, 08:45:41 PM
...yup, that's why I thought it may have "borrowed" the design of a coin?
Title: Re: Dumbarton foreshore 24/07/2015
Post by: Seagoon on July 27, 2015, 09:10:40 PM
Aye. Does the knight look a bit 'neo-' and could the legs be post-Muybridge in the pre-Muybridge style? ie Victorian?? Or is it a more naïve earlier object?
Title: Re: Dumbarton foreshore 24/07/2015
Post by: P0k3Rman on July 27, 2015, 09:39:30 PM
...yup, agree with your comments on the horse, and the key could be the legend on the artefact, as it would be more likely to give away the time period? It could date post medieval all the way through to Victorian?

another update.....
Hello,
I am replying in my colleague Natasha’s absence to let you know that your find arrived safely. The front of your button shows what is a copy of a medieval seal matrix, with a knight on horseback. However the style of the object would suggest a somewhat later date.

3 1/2 years later... I've come across this whilst researching something else. Thought it looked familiar. Looks like it's indeed a (1960s?) retro button based on an old seal or coin. I'm not sure about the motto, but you can translate muttus for yourselves...
