Nice find Tam, unfortunately I can't look up what it is at the moment as I'm sitting in my car outside the supermarket where the wife's away shopping. If someone doesn't ID it soon I'll have a look later when I get home. ;D

Nice button. Looks like the Clan Munro crest...  Update: no, it's the Carnegie crest (see below)

Seagoon beat me to it! I think the motto reads DREAD GOD which is the motto of Clan Munro and the bird emblem looks like a griffin which also features on their crest. Check the back to see if there is anything stamped on it as it is could be by London maker Jennes and probably early 19th century. I could be way off the mark though!!

Well done Hawkeye - you did the work!  :)

But, it looks like it isn't Munro at all! From Fairbairn, the "bird"is a winged thunderbolt. It looks like the crest is Carnegie, and may relate to the estate of:

Carnegie, Rt. Hon. Sir James, K.T., Earl of Southesk, Baron Carnegie of Kinnaird and Leuchars, in Scotland, Baron Balinhard of FarneLl, Forfarsh., in the United Kingdom, and a Baronet of Nova Scotia, Kinnaird Castle, Brechin, N.B., a thunderbolt ppr., winged or. Dread God. 247. 6

I guess the button will relate to the estate and date from later...  although the family Seat is now at Elsick up towards Aberdeen.    Tam, do any of these places relate to where you found it ?    Cheers!
