Theft by Keeping?

IN CONCLUSION
I know a couple of beach detectorists who always declare any jewellery they find. In addition they also post on social media in search of the owner. If unclaimed after a certain time, the item becomes the finders. I think you must be seen to make all reasonable efforts to find the original owner. It's wiser to be cautious and careful than to be hasty or rash and so do something you may later regret.

The return of a ring is not always welcomed ... read here about one detectorist's experience:

Dost thou bid us fare-thee-well,
O Winter beknownst as John?
The equinox hath overtaken thee (no, not
that
Equinox...)
And the false Spring of hope
Too cold e'en for thy persistent effort...
Dear Scribe, write not us off just yet,
Nor consider likeness with Roxburgh or Verulam;
Nor contemplate despondent metaphors
(Say) of defeated propellers rising to the firmament
Or Norway-native pepingoes of cobalt hue...
But, prithee, Spring thyself forward!
Yet not so far as to the Autumn of our Days,
But to put on thy Summer façade,
And warmest memories of our Glory days,
And tell of efforts to show our Nation proud...
Still, who know'st what the future hold?
Grant our fortunes do transform us in a trice!
Thanks to thee for thy sterling - nay - aurelian ditties;
Knowing thee it hath been nice!
In the words of some Dead Poet or other...
Or as we say en Ecosse:
A'body, a'body, a'body...
...That's A' Fowks!

William McGonagall is alive and well.
No, really. That is a trite response and unfair.
You have surpassed yourself, Dave. I enjoyed that Ode to the Scribbler.
